Welcome to Prairie Creek Adventures

A little note from the front porch — on why we're here, what we're writing about, and what you can expect if you stick around.

Hi, friend.

I’m Kayla. My husband is David. Together we have a ten-acre farm in Arkansas, a whole lot of animals, a three-month-old daughter named Savannah, and a 100 year-old barn and a vintage camper we’re in the middle of restoring. I’m writing this first post from the porch — there’s a breeze off the creek, the pigs are making pig noises somewhere in the back pasture, and our Great Pyrenees pups are dutifully guarding the premises.

This is the first post on our new journal, and I want to tell you what it’s for.

What you’ll find here

Farm days. I’ll write about life on the farm as it actually is — which is a lot less Instagram-perfect than what you’re used to seeing. The pigs got out again. One of the turkeys has decided she hates me specifically. A chicken laid an egg inside the lawnmower. That kind of thing.

Recipes. I cook a lot. My whole family cooks a lot. I’ve got their recipes and a head full of kitchen memories, and I want to share them. Nothing fancy — just real food that feeds real people.

Hope. This is the big one. David and I waited thirteen years to become parents. We walked through infertility, miscarriages, failed IVF, and failed adoptions. I will write about adoption here — not constantly, not as our whole identity, but because it’s part of our story, and because adoption deserves a place in the conversation. If you found this site because you’re in year four or seven or eleven of that wait — I see you, and I’ll write for you sometimes.

June Bug’s Journey. That’s my vintage camper. She is a project. I am underqualified. It is going great (it is not going great).

Savvy Bunny. This is a little thing I’ve been working on — children’s stories featuring a character loosely based on Savannah. I’ll share them here as they come.

Our faith. David and I lead a Celebrate Recovery ministry at our church. Our faith is woven into everything — the farm, the adoption, the wait, the now. I won’t preach at you, but I won’t hide it either.

What this isn’t

This isn’t going to be a perfectly curated lifestyle blog. I’m ADHD and I write the way I think, which is fast and a little scattered and occasionally sideways. David is a lawyer, so he’ll show up from time to time to add the footnotes. We are not influencers. We are just two people who were tired of waiting and decided to live.

Why we’re doing this

Because something changed when we stopped waiting for life and started planting it. The farm happened. Our daughter happened. Joy happened. And now we want to document it — partly for Savannah, partly for our family, partly for anyone out there who needs a reminder that beautiful things can still come from the ground you thought was dead. We looked back at pictures and videos of our farm from 12-15 months ago and it’s unreal how different it looks. We have worked tirelessly on it and we are so proud. I’m living like it’s 2012 and blogs are all the rage because this is really more for us than anyone else.

So pull up a chair. I’ll put the kettle on.
